5 Women’s Hairstyles from the Past

Ever look back at an old photograph and wonder why you wore a certain piece of clothing or did your hair in a certain way? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. There have been some amazing, interesting, strange women’s hairstyles down the years, and you’ll see five of the biggest today!

These trend setting styles were iconic in their era, just ask anyone from Rumbie & Co hairdressers, I’m sure they will tell you all about these styles and if you have the type of hair for the cut.

1. The Rachel

For those who were trying to impress in the 1990s, there’s no doubting the popularity of ‘the Rachel’ cut. Back in 1994, Friends came onto our screens for the first time and everybody loved the style of Rachel Green, played by Jennifer Aniston. Although rooted in a classic shag cut, the Rachel is different in that it boasts lots of layers and highlights.

Unfortunately, Aniston has since said that she disliked the famous hairstyle. Among other reasons, she said it was ugly and that it was too difficult to maintain without a professional. This didn’t stop millions of women trying the cut!

2. Feathered and Layered

Before the world even knew a sitcom called Friends, Princess Diana was making headlines and making girls jealous of her short, fluffy, feathered and layered cut. In truth, we could look to Princess Diana for several inspirational haircuts (and she earned lots of short-haired fans since this was her main style).

However, despite all the different styles, the one that stands out and one she returned to time and time again was the poufy 1980s style with lots of layers and volume.

3. Pinned Back Curls

Now, it’s time to head back to the 1950s where short hair was common, and women were pinning back their curls each day. While some cut it short, others left the hair long and allowed this to add volume to the curls. Throughout the 1950s, curls and waves were extremely popular. While the 1940s offered us long, wavy hair with a parting to cover a part of the face, the next decade was a time to uncover the face and let the smile shine.

Interestingly, we saw a change in emphasis for women in this era. For the previous two decades, it’s fair to say that platinum hair was in. Suddenly, nobody cared about the colour and it was all about pinning the hair back and going for a uniform appearance.

4. Messy

Coming back to the future, it’s hard to pinpoint what happened in the noughties because celebrities and musicians went off on their own tangents. While some went short and spiky, others went heavy on the hair dyes, and another group wanted to lose their hair altogether. Despite this, it was normal to now wear messy hair (a stark contrast to the previous style where no strand could be out of place).

For many years, the men had an ‘out-of-bed’ look, and now women had the same. With long locks, it was acceptable to curl slightly and leave home with a messy look.

5. Side Ponytail

Remember when everyone would wear a side ponytail? While some wore it messy or curled, others wanted a straight side ponytail. For the extremely talented, they incorporated plaits with their side ponytail. We’ve seen all sorts of hairstyles from various decades, but this one is almost timeless. We could point disco-goers in the 1980s or stars like Fergie and J-Lo in the 2000s; in fact, Selena Gomez has been a huge supporter of the side ponytail in the 2010s.

While some hairstyles from the past are still acceptable, others are better left as memories. All of this reminiscing leads to one question though; what is the next big trend?
